Kamper Profile: Snoopy Bergeron

This boy has always been one handsome piece of dog. (Of course, the author of that statement is his father...) Snoopy was supposed to be a foster dog, but by the time 30 minutes had passed after the introductions, Snoopy’s place in Luc’s heart was permanent. He’s a black American Cocker Spaniel (as opposed to English Cocker Spaniels, which are a little longer in the snout and just a bit taller), and he exhibits all of their traits that made them the most popular breed in America for so many decades: loyalty, HUGE amounts of affection, curiosity, and a desire to be around, next to, and on their humans as much as possible.

His start in life was a bit rocky. He was first owned by a man who unfortunately passed away, then went to that man’s ex-wife’s household, and was shortly after surrendered to Maine Cocker Spaniel Rescue. Snoopy, at age 2-1/2, came to his third home with Luc, and they’ve never looked back.

Not that there weren’t a few bumps along the way; it took time and patience on the part of both of them to develop the trust that exists now. This is especially true when it comes to grooming procedures. Nail trimming didn’t come easy, but a few months and several boxes of small treats later, Snoopy grew to trust Luc to do pretty much anything necessary to keep him looking good. When Luc met Jen, it was pretty much love at first sight...for Snoopy, too, and they bonded so quickly that it wasn’t long before Snoopy would pine away at the door whenever she would go back to her own home. Once she moved in, he was happy as a clam, and her position as "Mama" was cemented long before Luc and Jen got married.

Snoopy lives with his younger adopted sister, Gracie, as well as two cats, Joey and Brady. He’s lived nearly his entire life with other dogs and with cats, so he’s at ease with members of both species. He’s also used to guest dogs frequently coming in to the house and staying for a few days, as his parents often have some (and on some occasions all) of their boarding clients in the living quarters. He doesn’t seem to have a problem with other dogs of all sizes clamoring about the house! He also loves having people over, and will wag his nub of a tail at blinding speed when he gets to greet them at the door. He spends a portion of his mornings out in the play yard with all of Kamp K9’s clients, and while he doesn’t run quite as much as he used to, he still has his speed and a hint of a mischievous streak.

He’s a wonderful boy whose mom and dad consider themselves very lucky to have him in their lives, and privileged to be the rubbers of his tummy.

Some of you may have noticed the samples we’ve been displaying and giving out on our front counter lately. They’re a series of smoothie treats called “Smart Pup,” made by Ubuntu, a Portland-based company. We have them because one of our clients works for this company, and we’ve done a little beta-testing here with our own dogs.

The idea is to have a smooth, yummy treat with supplements added. This type of treat is said to be much better at delivering the nutritional value of the supplements than dry treats. They’re peanut butter and banana flavored, and nearly every dog who’s tried them has absolutely loved them.

They’re in the process of being released into major pet retail stores, so you should be able to find them soon.

You can check out their web site at www.ubuntupet.com/products/smart-pup
