Kamper Profile: Alder & Nikon
Warren
Alder & Nikon are German Wirehaired and Shorthaired
Pointers (respectively) belonging to Kyle and Samantha
Warren. True to breed, they’re both highly energetic,
intelligent, and with a keen instinct for the hunt.
They’ve been Kampers for nearly 2 years now, and
it’s been great having them around!
Alder was named for Alder Stream Township in Western
Maine, and came in 2001 into a family with a long
tradition of hunting and operating hunting camps.
Right from the start, she showed herself to be,
as her parents say, "Headstrong, independent, proud,
and with a brilliant intellect and hunting ability…Alder
was wise beyond her years." Two years later, when
Kyle took Samantha on one of their first dates,
Alder, a jealous chaperone at first, dropped a malodorous
gift right in the bed of his truck. It didn’t take
everyone long to get over it. When Kyle and Sam
were married in 2005, Alder served as their "ring
bearess," carrying the rings in a tennis ball tied
with red ribbon around her neck.
Whereas Alder came from out of state, Nikon was
found in Rumford. On the way to a friend’s barbecue,
Sam & Kyle spotted a sign at the side of the
road saying "Puppies for Sale." On the way back
home, they saw the other side of the sign, which
said "German Shorthaired Pointers for Sale" and
saw the puppies playing outside. They HAD to stop.
They chose the first-born, a male, and wrote their
two final choices for names (Meddler & Nikon)
on tennis balls and allowed Alder to select her
baby brother’s new name, and he came home two weeks
later. According to Sam, "That first night, he cried
from his crate for a few seconds and was immediately
brought into the bed where he slept soundly the
entire night. He has slept in the bed every night
since. Meanwhile, Alder began sleeping in his crate,
and the two formed a unique bond that we still don't
entirely believe or understand. Alder, a dominant
dog who used to be a bit of a grouch with others
dogs, has developed a tolerance thanks to her brother,
and while she still is the Queen B (Nikon will retrieve
the tennis ball but lay it at her feet so she doesn't
get mad), often times, we’ll discover them curled
up together."
We think they’re awesome! Nikon LIVES for tennis
ball fetch, and Alder will take Luc on a hunt in
the yard if he whispers to her: "Alder, where’s
the bird?" They enjoy their time here and the company
of others, and we’re happy to have them whenever
possible. Thanks, Sam & Kyle!

Just as one example, auto repair businesses
within 10 miles of the border of New Hampshire might
as well either close their doors or move them across
the state line, where there will be no sales taxes
on parts or labor...because that’s exactly where
all their customers are going to go.
I, personally, also have a HUGE problem
with the fact that the legislation was written with
the help of private corporate tax personnel, with
the express intent of making the new law friendlier
to them, while placing an unwieldy burden on small-fry
businesses like Kamp K9. THEY like it because they
can attract more high-bracket salary candidates from
out of state who are worried about Maine’s income
tax burden. (Like there are no Mainers who need the
work!)
If it means anything to you, charitable
organizations will lose part of their tax-exempt
status. If you take a cab to or from the airport,
you’re going to be taxed. Your out-of-state calls
will have additional taxes on them. As a musician,
I will lose work, because my band will have to start
charging sales tax along with its fees, which will
price them and many other bands out of reach for
many wedding receptions and other events. My bandleader,
whose sole source of income is the band, will take
another huge hit in the middle of a recession. And
yet...health club memberships and repair labor from
an electrician won’t be taxable? What gets taxed
and what doesn’t with this new law doesn’t make a
lot of sense at times.
Maine needs tax reform badly, but not
like this. Please vote yes on question 1!
