Info Feature: Sooper Dogs of Saco, ME

This is a bit of a treat for us: Being able to report a NEW BUSINESS around here, being operated by some clients of ours. Amy and Tim Lambert of Biddeford are the proud owners and operators of Sooper Dogs, a new dog and cat specialty store located on Main Street in Saco.

Amy and Tim (and their dog Sydney) have been customers of Kamp K9 for a while now (since Sydney graduated from Dances With Dogs puppy day care in South Portland). It’s been a dream of theirs to open up a fun, friendly shop in their area. The prep work was fairly intense and took several months, but the people of Saco, Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach have been very welcoming to them, and excited about the new store. Their motivation in opening Sooper Dogs is pretty straightforward; Amy was biology major in college, and during that time she worked for a veterinarian and really enjoyed it, but once she and Tim got their Golden Doodle Sydney, it really sparked an interest in animal nutrition. As Amy puts it, "I think most dog owners are like us and really want to feed their dog the best diet possible, but it’s definitely confusing. Tim and I did a lot of research and we really want to help people take care of their pets...at our small shop we can give people individualized attention and support."

One of their main areas of focus, therefore, is selling high-end dog and cat food. They carry dry, of course, but also high-quality canned/wet foods, and carry lines of raw diet and dehydrated raw, and they also carry healthy treats; several of them are made here in Maine (such as the Growlin’ Gourmet of Scarborough) and Kamp K9 has had a sample bucket of these on its front counter for a couple of weeks now. They even have frosted cookies and pies in their bakery case for parties and special occasions!

They also carry lots of toys, bedding, collars, clothes, and other accessories. Amy states: "We try to buy local as much as possible; we have lots of collars and clothes made here in Mane and in New England. We also try to support companies that are Earth conscious in their manufacturing."

You HAVE to love people who mix some altruism in with their business. They hope to be able to support local events, as well as other local shop owners and artists (just look at their cool window art work!). It’s also nice to see a great dog like Sydney performing such a vital function – atmosphere is CRITICAL to a shop!).

We wish them the best of luck. Go check ‘em out!
